. 🔥Make sure to save this post ↗️ for future reference! . 🤔 I wanted to show you guys how to train the body's 3 energy systems and why each one is important. When you ramp up your exercise intensity such as with HIIT, you increase the demand for ATP, but supplies of this oxygen are limited. So we switch from aerobic (oxygen-using) to anaerobic (oxygen-free) modes of metabolism. First, the phosphagen system kicks in which uses stored creatine to replenish ATP. (It's gotten its name because when ATP is burned, it loses a phosphate, and creatine phosphate then donates its own phosphate to recycle ATP! Teamwork!) . 🚴🏼‍♂️ Unfortunately the phosphagen system is very quickly spent, and then the muscle turns to glycogen. This is why people who eat chronically low carb diets and yet want to maintain the ability to do very high intensity exercise can see their performance suffer. Because after about 10 seconds, the muscle needs stored sugar to perform glycolysis. Otherwise, no power! This system can only take you to a maxiumum of 2 minutes. That’s why sprinting is very difficult! These modes are NOT meant to be sustained for a long period of time! . 👉🏼 The TAKEAWAY: Mix up your workouts. And keep in mind you’ll need to do bursts of exercise to hit the anaerobic threshold but know that your reps should be between 30 seconds and 2 minutes because if you’re only doing 10 second bursts, you will only be using creatine. 💪🏼 . 🏅 Hope this makes sense!
